Family Friday - Travel Planning

Hello, hello!!

Welcome back to A Mascara Moment!!

It is Friday and we have a big weekend planned!  It is time to clean up the yard, fertilize the grass and get started on the (hopefully not too big) yard reno.

Today I want to share with you how I travel plan!!

We decided that we are going on a small getaway for our First Wedding Anniversary!  Where are we going you ask?!  Las Vegas!!

The reason we are going to Las Vegas is two fold.  First, we wanted to get married in Vegas and it just didn't work out, so we had a backyard wedding.  Second, Reba and Brooks and Dunn are doing a show together at Ceasers Palace and this is like a concert dream to me!!

How to Decide Your Vacation Spot

We usually decide where we are going based on;
  1. Budget
  2. A specific event
  3. A location we want to see

For us, budget is number one.  We aren't going to use credit to go on vacation, so if we don't have the budget that year, we will just wait until we do.

For this particular vacation, we are event motivated.  I want to see Reba and Brooks and Dunn, so we have to go to Las Vegas to see them.  (Lol, have to, twist my arm).

The last time we went to Las Vegas, it was the location that drew us.  We had never been and wanted to see it!

How to Book The Trip

I was reading a blog the other day and the person was talking about how they booked through a travel agent.  I was blown away.  I didn't even think they had travel agents anymore.

It is so easy to book a vacation yourself!

I use a few different vacation booking sites and go with which ever offers the best price!
  • Expedia
  • Air Canada
  • West Jet
I like the one stop shop feel of these sites.  I can book flight, hotel, car and travel insurance in one go!

How to Plan Your To Do List

This is the best part!!

I am a planner!  I like to now what we are going to do, where we are going to eat and how we are going to do it!

My husband is not a planner and like to go with the flow and fly by the seat of his pants!

This gives our vacations a nice balance.  I make an insanely detailed plan before we go and then we get about half of it done!

I like to research through blogs, YouTube and travel sites.

Las Vegas Link

YouTube is a great resource for finding restaurants and tips about what to do.

Lonely Planet is the ultimate guide.  You can use the website or buy a book!

Blogs are some of the best resources out there.  It is a person's true account of their vacation and what they like to do!

I also take into account the fact that my husband prefer to relax over explore, so I only plan one activity per day!

Our Itinerary So Far;

Monday - Fly In 1pm
  • Pick Up Car
  • Lunch - In and Out Burger
  • Dinner -
  • Activity - KA 9:30pm
  • Snack - Corner Cakes

Tuesday
  • Brekkie - Wicked Spoon Buffet
  • Lunch - ??
  • Dinner - Cheesecake Factory
  • Activity - Shopping (Caesars Forum, Outlet, Fashion Show Mall)
  • Snack - Sprinkles Cupcakes

Wednesday
  • Brekkie - Buffet
  • Lunch - ??
  • Dinner - Gordon Ramsey Pub and Grill or
  • Activity - Reba and Brooks and Dunn
  • Snack

Thursday
  • Brekkie - Buffet
  • Lunch - ??
  • Dinner -
  • Activity - Relaxing at the pool
  • Snack

Friday - Fly Out 1pm
  • Brekkie - Bacchanal Buffet
  • Drive to Airport

As you can see, food is a very important part of our Vegas trip!  Food and shopping.  My husband gambles and plays in poker tournaments, but I am more about the shopping!

This will get re-worked a million times before we go, but I love planning the details all out!!

Our last trip to Vegas

I hope you found this helpful!  Leave me any tips or tricks you use to plan your vacations!

Have a great weekend!!

Take care,
Jen

Thursday Is For Luxe - My 5 Daily SLG Essentials

Hello, hello!!

Welcome back to A Mascara Moment!!

Today I am going to share with you my 5 Daily SLG Essentials!  I love watching these videos on YouTube.  I always find it interesting what people "couldn't live without" in their day to day life!

To do this, I literally reached into my current bag and pulled out the items that were inside.  These are the items that I carry with me on a daily basis and transfer from bag to bag!

If you are interested in seeing my 5 Daily SLG Essentials, keep reading...

6 Key Holder

Total essential.  I always have my house keys and car key with me!

Round Coin Purse

I do not put coins in my wallets, so this is a must have and has been my most used SLG besides the Key Holder!

Wallet

Unless I am on holiday or going to a small purse event, I am never without a proper wallet!  I don't enjoy using card holders or key pouches as a wallet.  I hate, hate, to fold my bills so a wallet is the way to go for me!

Full Sized

Compact

Mini Pochette

After I purchased this, it sat in my drawer for months.  I was at a loss for what to do with it.  Then I filled it up and threw it in my bag and now I am never without it.

This is a catchall in my bag and I love it!

Sunglass Case

It took me around a year to track this down and I do not regret it!  I keep my driving glasses in this case, so it is always with me!  It also looks so chic!

There you have it, my 5 SLG Essentials!!

As you can see, all of my SLG's are Louis Vuitton and when I open my bags it is a little LV explosion!

What are your top 5 Daily SLG's??

Take care and I will talk to you tomorrow!!

Wardrobe Wednesday - Pyjamas

Hello, hello!!

Welcome back to A Mascara Moment!!

What do you think of when you hear the word pyjamas?!

I think of Night gowns!!

It seems like such an old fashioned word these days.  Pyjamas generally means boxer short sets, leggings, baseball tees and tank tops.  Not in my house!  I love night gowns.  I have worn them since I was a child and refuse to give them up.

I tried my hand at boxer shorts, but I hate the elastic around my waist.  I spent most of my twenties sleeping in a tank top and undies, but once I had a child and was up at all hours of the night, I wanted to start wearing pyjamas again.

Night gowns was and is always my answer.

Funny story, after I purchased a night gown, I was at my grand mother's house and she had the same one!  This prompted my husband to start calling my night gowns "age inappropriate" sleep ware, lol.

Sleepshirts

These are the most popular type of night gowns on YouTube and with most of my friends.  The sleepshirt can be long sleeve, short sleeve or tank top style.  They are stylish and comfortable.

Two I have my eye on are;

Nordstrom*

Inspired by Little House on the Prairie

I am not going to lie, this is my favourite kind of night gown.  A little bit floral, a little bit lace, a super comfortable way to sleep!

Eileen West makes my very favourite sleep gowns!

Two I just ordered are;

Nordstrom*

My husband is going to make fun of me, but I don't care because I love them!

Negligée

A beautiful and delicate version of night gown.  Negligee is made of finer materials, is form fitting and is definitely sexier then the above night gowns.  Once my child (children fingers crossed) have grown a little more and are less likely to get yogurt and jam all over me in the morning, I will be adding some more delicate negligee to my pyjama wardrobe.

Two that I have in my shopping cart are;

Nordstrom*

Nordstrom*
How beautiful are those two chemises?!  I may have to pull the trigger on those sooner then later!

What is your preferred pyjama?  Leave your favourites below!!

Take care and I will talk to you tomorrow!!

Table Talk Tuesday - Buttermilk Brownies from Fat Witch Bake Sale

Hello, hello!!

Welcome back to A Mascara Moment!

I made brownies and thought I would share my favourite recipe with you!

My all time favourite brownie recipe is from the book Fat Witch Bake Sale.  I tried this out a couple years ago when I had some buttermilk in the fridge I needed to use up.  It has been my staple, go to, brownie recipe ever since!

I love boxed mix brownies the most.  It is probably because those were the ones I grew up eating.  I love how they are chewy and fudgy with the crisp crust.  This is probably why the Fat Witch Buttermilk Brownie recipe is my all time favourite. It is the closest home made brownie in taste to the boxed mixed brownies of my childhood.

Any how, let's get to the recipe...

Buttermilk Brownie adapted from Fat Witch Bake Sale

Note:  My version is not gluten free.  I substituted flour for gluten free flour.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 stick salted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup all purpose baking flour
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350F

Melt your butter and chocolate in the microwave.  I start with 30 seconds, stir everything and then put it back in for 10 second increments, stirring after each heating, until the chocolate is melted.

Put the butter/chocolate to the side to cool

Combine sugar, eggs, buttermilk and vanilla until completely mixed

Add cooled chocolate mixture and stir until combined and smooth

Add flour and chocolate chips into your liquids and fold in.  Do not over mix at this stage.

Add this to your lined and greased pan.  I like to use a 9x13 pan to get the crispy crust that I like.  If you use an 8x8 pan, you get a more cakey brownie.

Bake for 25-30 minutes

Let cool

I forgot to grease the edges, they stuck :(

Try not to eat them all in one sitting!  We failed at this.  They didn't last the day!

Let me know if you try this out!!

What is your favourite brownie recipe??

Take care and talk to you tomorrow!!

Make Up Monday - ABH x Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit

Hello, hello!!

Welcome Back to A Mascara Moment!!

As always, I hope you had a lovely weekend.  I made the mistake (lol) of purchasing the new WiiU Zelda game for my husband, so that is pretty much all that has been going on here all weekend!  HE plays, my son watches him and I read a book!

I have read two books this month and am so excited about that!!

Alright, let's get focused!

Today is about make up and even better then that, great make up!

We are going to be reviewing and swatching the new ABH x Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit.  This item is hot and you have probably already seen swatches, but if you have not and you care to hear what I think about it, keep on reading...

ABH x Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit

Swatches

The swatches for this product are amazing.  Intense, pigmented and buttery smooth!

There are already millions of swatches of this product on the internet.  I decided to do a brush swatch over a finger swatch so you could see how they blend out.

They are all still completely beautiful and look amazing on the skin.

Fun sparkly pink packaging!

Full on shimmer highlighter in multiple shades

Close up of the colours

Kitty Kat/Forever Young/Daydream/Forever Lit/Glo Getter/143
Interior Lighting

Kitty Kat/Forever Young/Daydream/Forever Lit/Glo Getter/143
Exterior Lighting

These swatches are pretty accurate to what they look like on the cheek, except for the first two.  Kitty Kat and Forever Young swatch very similar, but give different depths once on the cheek.

Stats from Sephora

What it does:

This palette contains:
- 6 x 0.16 oz/ 4.5 g Highlighter in Kitty Kat (pink with a platinum shimmer) Daydream (coral with white gold shimmer), Forever Young (pink pearl with silver shimmer), Forever Lit (platinum with lavender shimmer), Glo Getter (champagne with rose shimmer), 143 (rose gold with bronze shimmer)
What it is formulated WITHOUT:

- Phthalates
What else you need to know:
These highlighters cast an instant, intense glow. Complementing shades can be layered together to brighten cheekbones and collarbones, or worn separately over eyelids, brow bones, and inner corners of the eyes.

Review

I love this.  I say that a lot and I mean it.  I want to share with you the products that I truly love and recommend.  The colours works as highlighter, blush and eyeshadow for me.  The colours are all gorgeous and I have enjoyed using them all.  They give great light reflaction to the cheeks and give the eyes that gorgeous almost wet look.

Pros
  • opaque
  • pigmented
  • buttery soft
  • blend like a dream
  • layer over other products beautifully
  • last all day with no touch ups
  • no fall out
  • very little kick back in the pan
  • intense shimmer and light reflection
  • looks great on cheeks and eyes
  • reasonable price point ($52CAD)
  • cute packaging

Cons
  • shimmer and glitter overload (if you don't like that sort of thing!  I personally love it)
  • limited edition

Verdict:  This is love.  I recommend this product whole heartedly!  I hope to see more in this collab with Nicole Guerriero.

Have you purchased this amazing highlighter palette or are you over all this highlighter hype?!

Take care and I will talk to you tomorrow!

Family Friday - Family Skincare (Kiehls and Lush)

Hello, hello!!

Welcome back to A Mascara Moment!!

It is Friday everyone!!  I am looking forward to a weekend spent outside, playing with my son and starting to clean up the yard!  The weather is looking good, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

Today we are going to talk about family skincare.  I am going to share with you what we use in our household.

Skincare is very personal, this is just what works for us.  It has taken me ages to find the brand/products that work for my skin.  My husband is even more particular and he took forever to settle on a skincare routine.

If you are interested to see what my family uses, keep reading...

Family Skincare

My Skincare

I have dry skin that can be oily, but is mainly dry.  I am not acne prone, but do get the occasional pimple and I have leftover blemishes from my teenage years.  Genetically (lol) I come from a long line of wrinkle free women.  I am serious!  My paternal grandmother is 87 years old and she has no wrinkles.  A few crows feet, some laugh lines and some sag, but not one wrinkle!  The same with my maternal grandmother.  My mother is 57 and doesn't have a single darn wrinkle.  So, anti-aging is not something I worry about.  I focus heavily on moisture.

I use...

Kiehls Ultra Facial Cleanser
  • This cleanser gets off my makeup, cleans my skin and doesn't leave me feeling dry after I use it.  I swear by this cleanser.  I don't need to use anything else with it.

Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer
  • This moisturizer is the perfect balance for my skin.  It keeps it hydrated, but never feels heavy or sticky.  It has never caused a break out and works so well under makeup.  I use this day and night and have never felt like I need a heavier night cream.
I have not settled on an eye cream, but I think I am going to commit to a full size of Kiehls Creamy Avacado Eye Cream.

My Husband's Skincare

My husband has very sensitive, normal skin.  He isn't dry or oily, but his skin reacts to everything.  He also has no acne or blemishes.  He used to use the Kiehls men's line, but it started to give him a flaky rash.

He experimented with different products for about a year and settled on...

Lush Herbalism
  • He uses this to cleanse in the shower in the morning and before bed at night.  It is very natural and has cleared up his face rash.  It has exfoliating properties and works great with his thick beard.

Lush Cosmetic Lad
  • He moisturizes once a day, just to keep his skin lightly hydrated.  This product is thick and doesn't feel sticky or have an odour to it.  He swears by it.

My Son's Bath Products

I won't call this skincare, because my son is two!  But I will share his bath products with you.  I wash his face every morning and before bed, but I just use water.  He doesn't need a bunch of products on his perfect baby skin.

We went through so many brands before we started using the Kiehls Baby Line and I don't know why.  He has sensitive baby skin and he was getting so dry after his baths.  The moisturizer we were using wasn't even helping.  His skin was so red and patchy.  We even tried eczema specific products and nothing worked.

I started to research, I wanted something all natural and gentle.  When I saw that Kiehls had a baby line that was everything free and had no fragrance, I was sold.

These are the items I use for my son...

Kiehls Gentle Hair and Body Wash
  • We use this in his bath and to wash his hair.  It is gentle, tear free and does not dry out his skin.
Kiehls Nurturing Body Cream
  • I love that I can use this on his face and body and that it is scent free.  I moisturize him after a bath and when he needs it, but I try not to do it daily.
Kiehls Nurturing Oil
  • I use this when he gets extra dry.  His lower back is a problem area.  The diapers bother him and dry out that area.  A dose or two of this oil and he is good to go.  I also use it more in the summer when he is in and out of water all day, the pool, the sprinkler and more frequent baths.

Thursday Is For Luxe - Contemporary Handbag Collection (Coach, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Rebecca Minkoff, Longchamp)

Hello, hello!!

Welcome back to A Mascara Moment!

Today I would like to share with you the rest of my handbag collection.  These items are not considered "luxury: handbags, but I believe are referred to as Contemporary.

Now don't get me wrong, I believe that these items are luxury handbags.  They are beautifully made of high quality material, hold up very well and are unnecessarily expensive!

I love each and every one of these bags and I have never had any quality issues with any of these brands.

If you would like to see my collection and hear a little story about each bag, keep on reading...

Contemporary Handbag Collection

Longchamp, Kate Spade Baby Bag
Michael Kors Selma, Coach, Kate Spade Clutch
Rebecca Minkoff, Tory Burch

Clearly, I like pink bags...

Storytime

Longchamp 'Medium Le Pliage' in Peony

  • I have the LE Miaou edition.  I have a whole post on this item.  Check it out here.  I bought this to use as a diaper bag in the Fall and Winter.  It has been great so far.  I love that it has a huge interior where I can fit everything I need for my son and then some.  It has held up very well considering all the abuse it goes through.  It is also the perfect size to fit in the stroller basket.

Kate Spade

Harmony Diaper Bag

  •  This was a very generous gift from my best friend!  She got it for me so I could diaper bag in style!  I love this bag.  I also have a whole post on this item here.  It is the size of a LV Neverfull GM.  When I carry this, I don't carry an additional purse.  This fits everything I need for my son, myself, my husband, strangers in the mall.  It is huge!  It is also fully wipe able which is 100% necessary for a diaper bag!

Cork Clutch

  • This little Pink Patent and Cork clutch was the first designer handbag I ever purchased for myself.  I picked it up on my husband and I's first trip to Las Vegas.  We of course hit the outlet and all I wanted was a Kate Spade bag!  I fell in love with this clutch at first sight.  I use it when I want a fun, bright, bold bag for a night out.  I also use my LV Felicie gold chain with this to make it a shoulder/cross body bag.  This bag is near and dear to my heart!  Also, how fun is it!

Coach "Boston Style" Bag

  • My pretty pink Coach bag was also a gift from my best friend.  She is literally the best!  This was my first designer bag and I carried it for years.  It has a lot of wear, but still looks great.  I still use it from time to time.  I have never had more compliments on a bag then when I carry this one.  It got me hooked on designer bags!

Michael Kors Studded Medium Selma in Dune

  • I lusted after this bag for so long.  I missed out on purchasing it when they first released it.  This bag was so popular and the Dune colour was impossible to find.  I was going to settle for the black, but decided against it.  When they re-released it, I was able to pick it up, on sale!  I was so excited to own this bag and love to use it for a little bit of studded edge!

Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC in Latte/Gunmetal

  • This was a total impulse purchase.  This Mini MAC popped up on a popular Canadian consignment site and I bought it with the intention of using it when I took my son to baby gymnastics and the park, where I wanted a bag that was small, compact and wouldn't get in my way when I was playing around with him.  I have been using it for just those scenarios and it works great.  I don't have to leave my purse behind and risk someone taking it. Mini MAC holds my essentials and is so compact that it doesn't get in the way.  It is also so cute!

Tory Burch Marion Slouchy Tote in Black

  • I saved the best for last!  This is my favourite bag.  My husband purchased this for me years ago and I was in love.  I saw this on MakeupbyTiffanyD and could not stop thinking about it.  When he told me that I could have any handbag I wanted for my birthday, I knew exactly what I was going to be asking for!  It is beautiful, spacious and looks so great on.  It is classic and edgy all at the same time.  I wish Tory Burch still made this bag.  I used this bag every day for years and it shows almost no wear.  Just a perfect softening of the leather and the tiniest bit of corner wear.  This is still one of my favourite bags and always will be!

There is my little contemporary collection.  I get so much use out of these bags!  I am thinking of adding an Alexander Wang Rocco next.  I can't get it out of my head.

Do you have a AW Rocco?  Do you love it or should I just get a LV Speedy??

Take care and I will talk to you tomorrow!!
