Table Talk Tuesday - Spiced Apple Topping

Welcome back to A Mascara Moment!!

Today we are talking about food, specifically Spiced Apple Topping.

When my brother and I were young, we hated baked apples.  It was all the rage to core the apple, fill it with brown sugar and spice and bake it.  We just hated it.  So my mom decided to deconstruct the recipe and make it like this.

I have changed it up by minimizing the spice to just cinnamon and she would cut the apples into rings, where as I like them cut into cubes.

I generally pair this with oatmeal, either as a topping at breakfast or as a crumble.  I prefer to pre-cook my apples for crumble to cut down on the liquid.

Spiced Apple Topping


  • 6 apples - cubed.
  • 1/3 cup brown or yellow sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1-2 tbsp butter or margarine


  • Preheat oven to 400F
  • Wash and dry apples.
  • Cut apples into cubes or rings
  • Stir in lemon, sugar, salt and cinnamon.
  • Spread into pan.  It is fine if the apples overlap.
  • Cut butter into small pats and drop onto apples.
  • Bake for 20-40 minutes, depending on how you like the apples.  (I cook for 40ish minutes because I like them a little crispy)

Let cool and enjoy.

So simple, yet so delicious.

I am addicted to these apples.  I eat it every morning with oatmeal and peanut butter.
